NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free, open source screen reader for Windows. It makes it possible for blind people and those with visual impairments to access the Internet and many desktop applications.
NVDA comes bundled with eSpeak, so it can read content in English and 47 other languages. Users can have it read content in any language, as long as the user has a speech synthesizer that can speak that language.
NVDA will also work with refreshable Braille displays.
NVDA's strengths are its excellent web capabilities and its portability. It integrates well with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It can run from a USB flash drive, allowing users to move it between devices without installing additional software or drivers.
NVDA is somewhat less effective, but still functional when working with desktop applications, and some third party applications require the use of the Java Bridge.
